Welcome first-time visitors!

The Zen Center wants to help you feel centered, grounded, and at peace, so that you can develop your intuitive wisdom. By quieting the mind and body, you can experience being grounded, alive, and energized.

All are welcome at the Zen Center of Syracuse, regardless of background, religion, or financial situation. Zen Buddhism is a spiritual way of life, and is compatible with other practices and faith traditions. There is no doctrine, no dogma, only the opportunity to explore, learn, and connect within a supportive community.

Meditation positions can accommodate all physical needs.

Ruth Ozeki and Shinge Roshi In Conversation

Renowned novelist Ruth Ozeki and Shinge Roshi held a dynamic and wide-ranging discussion about the intersection of Zen practice and creativity.

Zen Calligraphy Portrait of Shinge Roshi

In 2013, Chinese painter and Zen practitioner Alok Hsu Kwang-Han created a Zen calligraphic energy portrait of Shinge Roshi, surrounded by the Hoen-ji Sangha, for her 70th birthday (Oct. 2). “We will look at it together and see what it reveals about her being in our midst,” Alok said. The painting was sent to Shanghai and mounted on a Chinese silk scroll.

On January 1, 2011, Shinge Roshi, Roko Sherry Chayat was installed as abbot of Dai Bosatsu Zendo Kongo-ji Buddhist monastery in the Catskill Mountains of New York State.

 

Introduction to Zen Meditation

In-person

Thursdays 6:00 – 8:00 pm

Zazen and instruction for first-time visitors and anyone new to meditation.  Arrive at the front door of the Forman House (main building) by 5:50 pm. Tea and discussion on the first Thursday of the month led by Shinge Roshi or an advanced practitioner.

Online

Wednesdays 7:00 – 8:30 pm ET

Online introductory instruction in Zen meditation, followed by meditation and an informal discussion. No experience is necessary.

*NOTE: Registration for each Wednesday class is required, no later than the Sunday night before. Send your name, confirming the class date, to: lauren@laurenann.net. If you miss the Sunday night deadline, we look forward to receiving your registration for any future Wednesday.


Zendo (meditation hall) procedure

Before your visit, please wear modest, neutral clothing, avoid fragrances, and arrive early to settle into the stillness of the Zendo. If bringing food, kindly ensure it is vegetarian.

While at the Zendo, please keep your phone silent, store valuables in the changing room, and remove any noisy jewelry. Embrace the quiet, stay still during zazen, and immerse yourself in the practice – you may find it deepens your experience.
