What is Jukai?
Jukai is a ceremony of lay ordination—an opportunity to formally take refuge in the Buddha, Dharma, and Sangha, and to receive the Bodhisattva Precepts. It marks a personal and public commitment to living with intention, compassion, and awareness. Those who participate in jukai prepare over time, studying the precepts and meeting with a teacher. At the ceremony, they receive a rakusu (a symbol of the Buddha’s robe), a Dharma name, and acknowledgment of their place in the lineage.
