Purpose
The purpose of residential training is to establish stability of practice for the community. In order to do that, we make a sustained, wholehearted commitment to practice. We each support and encourage each other in our training, and by taking responsibility for ourselves, we can extend this to the community and world at large. We work to maintain and sustain an atmosphere of training during our time here.
Openings
We periodically have openings for the residency program, although there are no openings at present. If you think you might be interested in a future opening, please contact the Zen Center at admin@zencenterofsyracuse.org
Prospective New Residents
The Residential Program offers an immersive way to deepen your Zen practice through daily meditation, shared responsibilities, and communal living. Residents live onsite at the Zen Center, with their own rooms and access to shared kitchens, bathrooms, and practice spaces. Life here is simple but full: you’ll join in morning zazen, help maintain the grounds, prepare meals, and support the sangha through mindful work known as samu.
This program is for those seeking more than weekend retreats—a way to integrate Zen into the rhythms of everyday life. You’ll be part of a small, supportive community guided by Shinge Roshi and other senior practitioners, with opportunities for dokusan (private interviews), Dharma talks, and regular sesshin (intensive retreats).
New residents are welcomed thoughtfully, through a careful interview process and trial period. We seek people who are sincere in their practice and respectful in shared spaces. Orientation and support are provided to help you settle in and fully engage with the training.
